Macae has a rapidly growing population of 170,000 inhabitants and is located 110 miles North East of Rio de Janeiro. It is the main operational base for exploration, drilling and extraction of more than 80% of all offshore oil in Brazil.
It is also home to the Petrobras Campos Basin business unit and over 3,500 oil-related businesses. Due to helicopter traffic to and from the oil rigs, Macaé has the second-busiest airport in Brazil, after Rio and São Paulo.
