Macae has a rapidly growing population of 170,000 inhabitants and is located 110 miles North East of Rio de Janeiro. It is the main operational base for exploration, drilling and extraction of more than 80% of all offshore oil in Brazil. It is also home to the Petrobras Campos Basin business unit and over 3,500 oil-related businesses. Due to helicopter traffic to and from the oil rigs, Macaé has the second-busiest airport in Brazil, after Rio and São Paulo.

Brazil has a well-established oil industry and contains the second largest oil reserves in South America, after Venezuela. Brazil continues to strive for self-sufficiency in oil production and Petrobras, the state oil company, has investment plans of $34.4 billion up to 2007, of which $24.4 billion will be dedicated to Exploration & Production. The country has major offshore oil and gas reserves requiring development, particularly deep and ultra deepwater fields. Current production is in the region of 1.9 million bpd, but to enable production to reach 2.6 million bpd another 10 platforms are being built.
